The Canaveral Pilots Association does not have any current openings for a Deputy Pilot.  Our most recent opening will be filled following the Deputy Pilot Examination administered in March 2023 by the Florida Board of Pilot Commissioners.  The qualification and application period for that exam is closed.

The process of qualification, examination, and selection of a Deputy Pilot for any Florida port is administered by the Florida Board of Pilot Commissioners.  Interested candidates should visit the BOPC web site here: Harbor Pilots – MyFloridaLicense.com  to find out information on minimum qualifications and experience needed for eligibility to sit for the Deputy Pilot License exam.  Openings at Florida ports and examination dates are posted on the site.

Most successful candidates for Florida Deputy Pilot openings have had a seagoing career from ten to fifteen years and have taken the Deputy Pilot Examination from three to five times.  Studying and testing is usually a multi-year commitment.  Once a candidate has been selected by the Secretary of the Florida Dept of Business & Professional Regulation and appointed to the Port, a candidate can expect a rigorous two to three year training period with the Pilot Association supervised by the Board of Pilot Commissioners.  After completion of the training program, the candidate will test for a State Pilot License to become fully qualified for the port.
